Pneumococcal Disease, Invasive
Invasive pneumococcal disease is caused by the bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae. It is spread through having close contact with someone who has the bacteria in their nose and mouth, including asymptomatic carriers (people without symptoms, but still have the bacteria). Infection happens when the pneumococcal bacterium gets into a normally sterile site (e.g., blood) and can cause pneumonia, sepsis (blood poisoning), and meningitis.

Exclude until 24 hours of antibiotic treatment is taken. If too ill to participate in regular activities, may need to exclude until feeling well enough to participate regularly.
