Caring for Your Child's Teeth

Germs that cause cavities are in your mouth. Be careful what you share with your baby.

  • Clean your baby's mouth every day.
  • Use a clean, damp cloth to clean your baby's gums.
  • When baby teeth start to appear, use a small, soft toothbrush moistened with water to clean them.

To help your child through their teething pain, try the following:

  • Keep a supply of damp, clean facecloths in the fridge for baby to chew on.
  • Apply a light rubbing pressure with a clean finger. This can be soothing and offer some relief.
  • Refrigerate your baby's teething ring.

Note: If you choose teething products for your baby such as teething rings and gels, be aware of their warnings.

Congratulations! It's your baby's first birthday!

You are invited to call the Health Unit to arrange a visit free of charge.

It is important that a dental professional check your children's teeth by their first birthday so that any problems are found early.

We will talk to you about your baby's teeth, nutrition, and answer any dental questions you have.

Child younger than three?

  • Use a soft, small toothbrush moistened with water to clean their teeth.
  • After their third birthday, a pea-sized amount of fluoridated toothpaste can be used.
  • Encourage them to spit out, not swallow any extra toothpaste.

  • Brush your child's teeth twice a day, morning and before bed, using a soft bristle toothbrush and a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.
  • Bring your child to the dentist for regular visits.
  • If you do not have dental coverage, and are unable to afford dental visits, you may be eligible for Healthy Smiles Ontario.

Do you know how cavities happen?

Cavities or tooth decay happens when sugary foods are frequently left on your teeth.

The bacteria (plaque) already in your mouth feeds on the sugar and produces acid. These acids attack the outer layer of the tooth (enamel) weakening it and causing cavities.

Plaque + Sugar = Acid Attack / Acid Attack + Tooth = Cavity
