Age-Friendly Communities
What is an Age-Friendly Community?
Age Friendly Communities are accessible environments that allow for individuals of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds to live safely, stay involved, active, and informed.
The World Health Organization ("WHO") developed the Global Age-Friendly Cities: A Guide which lists the challenges and opportunities of seniors living in cities around the world, in response to the aging population. As people age their needs change and communities need to adapt. The WHO has also developed a Checklist of Essential Features of Age-friendly Cities. The checklist can be used by communities to check their age-friendliness across eight domains. These eight domains include:
- Outdoor spaces and buildings
- Transportation
- Housing
- Social Participation
- Respect and Social Inclusion
- Civic Participation and Employment
- Communication and Information
- Community Supports and Health Services
