Dental screenings are visual assessments only. They do not replace your child's regular visit with a dentist.
Screenings are done by a registered dental hygienist who uses sterilized instruments and new gloves for each student. If we find that your child needs urgent dental care or if they qualify for preventive services, we will send a dental screening report card home from school with your child.
We screen students according to Ministry guidelines. You will receive a letter through your child's school notifying you of our upcoming visits as well as what grades will be screened at your child's school this year. We also screen students by parent request.
Screenings are done at your child's school but we can make other arrangements at locations throughout the Health Unit district.
Dental screening programs are part of the Ontario Public Health Standards and the Health Promotion and Protection Act.
If you want your child included in screenings on an annual basis or excluded from the dental screenings, please contact us at 705-474-1400 ext. 5227 or toll-free 1-800-563-2808. You can also email us at teeth@healthunit.ca
