Invasive pneumococcal disease is caused by the bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae. It is spread through having close contact with someone who has the bacteria in their nose and mouth, including from people carrying the bacteria who have no symptoms. Infection happens when the pneumococcal bacterium gets into a normally sterile site (e.g., blood). It can cause pneumonia, sepsis (blood poisoning), and meningitis.
