Cancer

Breast Cancer Incidence and Deaths

  • In 2013, the age-standardized incidence rate for breast cancer among females in the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit region was statistically lower compared to the Ontario rate (102.0 versus 141.5 cases per 100,000 female population, respectively).
  • In 2012, 25.9 deaths due to female breast cancer occurred per 100,000 female population in the Health Unit region compared to 25.6 deaths per 100,000 female population in Ontario. Between 2003 and 2012, the age-standardized mortality rate for breast cancer among females in the Health Unit region was similar to the rate for Ontario.

Cervical Cancer Incidence and Deaths

  • In 2013, the age-standardized rate for cervical cancer in the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit region was statistically similar to the Ontario rate (8.1 versus 7.5 cases per 100,000 female population, respectively).
  • In 2012, the age-standardized mortality rate for the Health Unit region was similar to the Ontario rate (3.0 versus 2.6 deaths per 100,000 female population, respectively).

Colorectal Cancer Incidence and Deaths

  • In 2013, the age-standardized rate for colorectal cancer in the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit region was statistically higher compared to the Ontario rate (94.1 versus 62.8 cases per 100,000 cases, respectively). The age-standardized rate was 50% higher among females within the Health Unit region compared to Ontario females in 2013. The rate among 30 to 49 year olds was almost three times higher in the Health Unit region compared to the Ontario population in the same age group.
  • In 2012, the mortality rate for colorectal cancer in the Health Unit region was statistically higher to the Ontario rate (36.4 versus 22.8 deaths per 100,000 population, respectively). The age-standardized mortality rate was 50% higher among males within the Health Unit region compared to Ontario females in 2012. The mortality rate among adults aged 80 years or older in the Health Unit region was almost double the rate compared to 80 year olds in Ontario.

Diabetes

Diabetes Prevalence

  • In 2015/16, the percentage of the population in the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit region aged 12 years or older who reported being diagnosed with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes (6.2%) was statistically similar to the Ontario percentage (7.1%).
  • Although separating the types of diabetes was thought to be important in the past, recent evidence regarding the benefits of aggressive management of type 2 diabetes may mean that the distinction is less critical from a planning and policy perspective.

Diabetes-Related Hospitalizations and Deaths

  • In 2017, the age-standardized rate (ASR) for diabetes-related hospitalization was 179 hospitalizations per 100,000 population in the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit region, 77% higher than the Ontario rate. Among children and youth aged 19 years and younger, the rate for diabetes-related hospitalization in the Health Unit region was about 2.5 times the Ontario rate.
  • In 2012, mortality (death) due to diabetes in the Health Unit region was 41% higher than the Ontario rate (28.7 versus 20.4 deaths per 100,000 population, respectively). The age-standardized mortality rate among females in the Health Unit region was about 68% higher compared to females in Ontario.
  • Although separating the types of diabetes was thought to be important in the past, recent evidence regarding the benefits of aggressive management of type 2 diabetes may mean that the distinction is less critical from a planning and policy perspective.

Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

Hypertension Prevalence

  • In 2015/16, a comparable percentage of the population in the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit region aged 12 years and older reported having hypertension (19.1%) compared to Ontario (17.4%).

Hypertension-Related Hospitalizations

  • In 2017, the age-standardized hospitalization rate for hypertension in the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit region was more than double and significantly higher than the Ontario rate (42 versus 18 hospitalizations per 100,000, respectively).
  • The age-standardized rate among females in the Health Unit region was double the rate compared to Ontario females in 2017. The rate among those aged 20 to 44 years in the Health Unit region was almost triple the Ontario rate among the same age group.
