Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can have lasting effects on a person’s health and well-being. These experiences are closely tied to the conditions in which people are born into, grow up in, live, work and age (also known as the Social Determinants of Health).
Factors like poverty, housing instability, and limited access to healthcare increase the risk of ACEs. However, resiliency — the ability to overcome adversity and thrive despite of it—can help protect individuals from long-term harm. Providing children and youth with community belonging, coping skills, autonomy and competence can help mitigate the negative effects of ACEs, strengthen resilience and promote healing.
