Mental Health

If you are in crisis, please go to your local hospital or call 9-1-1.

Mental health is an important part of our overall health. There is no health without mental health. Mental health and physical health are related and affect each other. Mental health problems are common. One in five Canadians experiences a mental health or addiction problem. By the time Canadians reach 40 years of age, one in two have - or have had - a mental illness. We all have mental health and are all affected by it. People of all ages, from babies to adults, need positive mental health to feel well and thrive.

Mental health and mental illness are two different things. Positive mental health is feeling, thinking, and acting in ways that make life more enjoyable and makes dealing with challenges easier.

Mental illness refers to a wide range of disorders that affect mood, thinking and behaviour, which can result in distress and/or impairment of functioning (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health). Learn more from this Promoting Mental Health - Finding a Shared Language video about the relationship between mental health and mental illness.
