Nutrition in Child Care Settings.
A positive relationship with food starts early in life with healthy eating habits. Childcare providers play an essential role in helping children develop a lifelong healthy relationship with food and supporting children’s growth and development, health, and well-being. How you approach feeding and mealtimes is as important as what you offer. Daily meal and snack times offer an excellent opportunity to offer nutritious food and expose children to new foods.
A supportive nutrition environment is one that encourages and facilitates positive relationship with food. It provides a nurturing space where children have:
- access to age-appropriate food at regular times
- a safe and encouraging eating atmosphere
- opportunities to explore and try new foods
- the ability to listen to their hunger and fullness cues
Both children and adults have a role to play in feeding. Adults can Nurture Children Through Responsive Feeding and learn about Strategies for Mealtime Success.
It is the adults’ role to decide:
- What foods to offer children (see menu planning info below)
- When to feed children (at scheduled times)
- Where to feed children (at a table with peers)
Trust children to decide:
- Which foods to eat (of the foods you offer)
- How much to eat (if any)
