Creating a school environment and culture that supports healthy eating helps students learn better and promotes lifelong healthy habits.

Supporting Students

  • Linking Healthy Eating and Mental Well-Being Infographic (English and French): This infographic shows how healthy eating is linked with mental wellbeing in children and youth.
  • Mental Health and Weight Bias in Schools (English and French): This resource outlines how educators can support size inclusive environments.
  • Overview of Disordered Eating Prevention: How Schools Can Help (English) and (French)      
  • Nurturing Healthy Eaters in Elementary Schools (English and French) and Secondary Schools (English and French): This resource describes how school community members can support students to nurture healthy eating.
  • School Lunch Your Kids Will Munch Handout (English and French)

Lesson Plans and Activities

  • Food is Science: Experiential, evidence-based, bilingual resources to help educators understand and teach new food literacy learning in Ontario’s Science and Technology Curriculum (Grades 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9). Supported by Ontario’s Ministry of Education and project partners, Sustain Ontario has developed lesson plans, learning videos, related readings, and student resources.
  • Teach Food First (English only): This British Columbia resource has guidance for teaching about food in a positive way and lesson plans for grade K-8 classrooms. A creative team from the homelands of the Coast Salish, Nuu-chah-nulth and Kwakwakaw’akw Families (as known as Vancouver Island) created Traditional First Nations Foods lesson plans. 
  • Bright Bites: The Bright Bites website has tips for educators and ideas for cross-curricular connections to healthy eating, from Art, Language, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science and Technology.
  • Paint Your Plate: The Paint Your Plate lesson plans for grades 1-8 help to teach students about the importance of vegetables and fruit.
  • Food Matters Action Kit (English and French): A kit, activity guide, posters, and booklets to teach lessons on the relationship between nutrition and environment.
  • Canada’s Food Guide Educator Toolkit: The toolkit can be used with children to help them learn food skills, develop healthy eating patterns, and understand Canada’s food guide. Explore activities for ages 4 to 6, ages 7 and 8, and ages 9-11.

  • Canada’s Food Guide: The Canada’s Food Guide website has many resources to assist in teaching the food guide principles to students. Class sets of the food guide are available from Health Canada.
  • UnlockFood.ca: This Dietitians of Canada run website, includes information on nutrition, recipes, videos, and interactive healthy eating tools.
