Communicable Disease Control  

  • Conduct infectious disease surveillance and reporting
  • Provide public health management of cases and contacts to minimize the public health risk
  • Provide education to the public and community partners related to infection prevention and control
  • Manage outbreaks in long-term care homes, retirement homes, hospitals and other community settings
  • Collaborate with health care providers regarding diseases of public health significance as outlined in the Health Protection and Promotion Act

Emergency Management

  • Provide a public health perspective to the 31 municipalities, nine First Nations, levels of government, external stakeholders, and community partners in their prevention, mitigation, preparedness activities
  • During a municipal emergency, work with municipalities during the response and recovery phases
  • Provide support to the municipality’s response and recovery efforts by representing the Medical Officer of Health in the emergency community control group
  • Manage the Health Unit response during a health emergency
  • Maintain the Health Unit Emergency Management Plan and Continuity of Operations Plan through regular revisions and tests
  • Ensure the Health Unit is in a state of readiness to respond to any emergency
  • Provide education to staff and stakeholders regarding emergency management

Environmental Health 

  • Test water, including drinking water and recreational water (i.e. beach water)
  • Test pool, hot tub and spa water
  • Offer safe food handling training
  • Answer questions related to health hazards such as bed bugs, blue green algae, air quality and mould
  • Provide education on rabies prevention
  • Enforce Smoke Free Ontario Act
  • Inspect food service providers
  • Inspect personal service settings (hair salons, tattoo parlours, body piercings)
  • Monitor diseases such as West Nile virus and Lyme disease
  • Inspect and monitor environmental spills

Healthy Families

  • Promote preconception and prenatal health (such as prenatal classes)
  • Provide infant feeding information and support (such as breastfeeding support and clinics)
  • Promote the healthy growth and development of children
  • Promote positive parenting of children through community partnerships and family support (such as parenting education)
  • Provide the Healthy Babies Healthy Children program to families who qualify

Healthy Schools

  • Work with schools on health-related activities to encourage lifelong healthy behaviours of school-aged children
  • Provide information on health topics such as injury prevention, substance misuse, physical activity, healthy eating, and tobacco and substance misuse
  • Provide teaching resources for use in classrooms
  • Provide parent resources about sleep, physical activity, and nutrition
  • Provide youth engagement opportunities

Oral Health

  • Dental clinic for eligible adults with limited or no access to dental care
  • Healthy Smiles Ontario (HSO) dental clinic for children and youth 0-17 years of age
  • Promote and educate the public about oral health
  • Conduct school dental screening
  • Answer questions related to eligibility criteria for HSO and Adult clinic
  • Answer questions related to oral health

  • Provide leadership on strategic planning;
  • Communicate with the public about health issues and emergencies;
  • Promote the Health Unit and the priorities of all programs.

Vaccine Preventable Diseases 

  • Maintain copies of vaccination records
  • Record vaccination status
  • Provide vaccination clinics to the public
  • Answer questions related to travel vaccines and provide travel vaccines at a cost
  • Answer questions related to the suspension process
  • Assist in completion of forms for school or employment
  • Provide tuberculosis testing for school and medical reasons only
  • Answer questions related to school registration forms
  • Answer questions related to child care registration forms
