NORTH BAY, ON - The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit (Health Unit) has declared a respiratory outbreak at Chartwell Barclay House Retirement Residence (Barclay House) - the causative agent is COVID-19. On Nov. 2, 2021, the Health Unit was made aware of an individual who tested positive. Additional infection prevention and control measures were put in place immediately.

On Nov. 3, 2021, COVID-19 testing was made available to staff and residents of Barclay House through the North Bay Regional Health Centre’s Assessment Centre. On Nov. 3, 2021, 22 additional individuals tested positive for COVID-19 prompting the declaration of an outbreak. As of this morning a total of 23 individuals have tested positive for COVID-19 associated with the outbreak. A COVID-19 outbreak is declared in a Retirement Home when there are two or more confirmed cases of COVID-19 in residents, staff or visitors and the cases are linked. The situation is still evolving, as COVID-19 test results continue to come back, and the outbreak investigation is ongoing.

Increased infection prevention control measures are currently in place at Barclay House including being closed to visitors. Out of an abundance of caution, if you have been to Barclay House between Oct. 20 and Nov. 3, 2021, and have not been contacted by the Health Unit, please monitor for symptoms of COVID-19. If you feel unwell, isolate immediately and arrange to be tested.

“Our staff are working collaboratively with Barclay House staff to manage the outbreak,” said Dr. Jim Chirico Medical Officer of Health. “It is critical that everyone continues to follow public health measures including getting vaccinated against COVID-19, washing hands often and staying home if unwell, even if fully vaccinated, to help slow the  spread of COVID-19 and help save lives. Being fully vaccinated is the best protection we have against COVID-19.”
