Community Gardens & COVID-19

Community gardens play an important role in our food system. The Health Unit is supportive of community gardens because they allow people to grow food, be active and can promote mental well-being.

Community gardens are considered essential by the Government of Ontario for the purpose of growing food. However, they must follow the guidance from their local Health Unit related to reducing the spread of COVID-19. At this time, community gardens are not to be used as recreational spaces or for social gatherings.

Garden coordinators/managers must ensure that all garden members/clients, staff, and volunteers are aware of the recommendations listed in the memos below from the Health Unit.

The Health Unit has also created signs that can be posted at garden sites:

For more information about COVID-19, visit For questions about community gardens, or to request signage and/or handouts of the memos, email or call 1-800-563-2808 ext 5210.
