Normalize It

four women breastfeeding their babies

Contact(s)

Breastfeeding mothers are more likely to succeed at reaching their breastfeeding goals with support. The Normalize It campaign was launched as a way to:

  • Contribute to a community environment that is supportive of breastfeeding
  • Increase breastfeeding visibility
  • Engage the community in breastfeeding education and awareness
  • Promote the Health Unit's breastfeeding programs and resources for parents needing guidance and support

From October 1 to 15, 2018, you will see cutout pictures of mothers breastfeeding throughout our district. For a chance to win one of three grocery gift cards (total prize value - $400!), take a picture with a cutout, send a personal picture or a message to the Health Unit explaining why it is important for mothers to breastfeed in public. More information on the contest below.

Breastfeeding - Why does it matter?

Breastfeeding benefits everyone in our communities by keeping babies and mothers healthy and preventing disease. Health Canada and the Canadian Pediatric Society recommend breastfeeding up to two years and beyond - but many mothers feel uncomfortable breastfeeding in public. This is a barrier to continued breastfeeding.

We ask that you join us in participating in this initiative, and to show your support for breastfeeding mothers.

Breastfeeding Cutouts

  • In the spring, a photoshoot was held in North Bay to celebrate breastfeeding mothers
  • With the participants' permission, four pictures were selected to be used as cutouts for the Normalize It campaign
  • The cutouts will be placed throughout the Health Unit district, and the public is encouraged to take photos with the cutouts for a chance to win one of three grocery gift cards

Contest Rules

  • If you see one of the four breastfeeding cutouts in the community, take a picture with the cutout!
    • Note: we encourage you to take a picture with all of the cutouts you come across! Only one photo can be entered per cutout
  • If you do not come across a cutout, you can still participate by sending a photo or sending the Health Unit a short message describing why breastfeeding in public is important
  • Send the photo by private message to the Health Unit Facebook page (via the message tab at the top of the Facebook page) or email it to healthy.families@healthunit.ca
  • The pictures and messages received throughout the week will be collected and uploaded into a Facebook album and shared on October 16, 2018
  • The public will then be asked to vote by "liking" their favourite pictures and/or story. Voting will close October 23, 2018 at 3 p.m.
  • The three pictures with the most votes will win the following prize:
    • First Prize - $250 grocery gift card
    • Second Prize - $100 grocery gift card
    • Third Prize - $50 grocery gift card
