 Glossary of Terms
Cases: Cases are those that have received a positive COVID-19 test who have a permanent address within the Health Unit’s district. It also includes students attending a post-secondary institution if they are residing in our Health Unit's district most of the time, at the time of diagnosis.

Deaths: Refers to a lab-confirmed case that dies during the COVID-19 investigation. It does not account for unreported deaths that occur after the investigation is closed.

District of Residence:

  • District of Nipissing - municipalities in the Health Unit’s service area include: North Bay, Mattawa, Township of Bonfield, Township of Calvin, Township of Chisholm, Township of East Ferris, Municipality of Mattawan, Township of Papineau-Cameron, the Municipality of West Nipissing, Nipissing Unorganized North part, Nipissing Unorganized South part, Nipissing First Nation
  • District of Parry Sound includes: Municipality of Callander, Dokis First Nation, Township of Machar, Township of Nipissing, Municipality of Powassan, Village of South River, Village of Sundridge, Township of Armour, Village of Burk’s Falls, Township of Joly, Town of Kearney, Municipality of Magnetawan, Parry Sound Unorganized Centre part, Parry Sound Unorganized East part, Wasauksing First Nation, Henvey Inlet First Nation, Magnetawan First Nation, Township of McMurrich/Monteith, Township of Perry, Township of Ryerson, Township of Strong, Township of The Archipelago, Township of Carling, Municipality of McDougall, Township of McKellar, Town of Parry Sound, Township of Seguin, Municipality of Whitestone, Shawanaga First Nation

Exposure: Source of acquisition is determined through case management and contact tracing. Cases with multiple exposures or risk factors are assigned to a single acquisition based on the hierarchy below.

  • Travel: Travelled outside of Ontario within the 14 days prior to becoming ill.
  • Outbreak-Associated: Cases with a known exposure linked to an ongoing workplace, long-term care home, retirement home, hospital, or other institution outbreak. Cases residing within the Health Unit's district may be associated with an outbreak declared outside the Health Unit region.
  • Close Contact: A person who provided care for the confirmed case, including healthcare workers, family member or other caregivers, or who had other similar close physical contact, or, a person who lived with or otherwise had close, prolonged contact with a confirmed case while the case was ill. The Health Unit works closely with confirmed cases to identify their close contacts and then follows up with all close contacts.
  • Community: No travel history, not outbreak-associated, and no known close contact with a confirmed case.

Hospitalized: A person with a positive COVID-19 test who is currently admitted and isolated in hospital.

LTCH/RH Outbreak (Current): an outbreak in a Long-Term Care Home is declared with a single, laboratory confirmed case of COVID-19 in a resident or staff member. When only asymptomatic residents and/or staff with positive results are found as part of enhanced surveillance testing of residents and/or staff, it may not be necessary to declare an outbreak. An outbreak may be declared over when there are no new cases in residents or staff after 14 days from Ministry of Health defined events.

LTCH/RH Outbreaks (Total): Includes current outbreaks as well as outbreaks that have been declared over.

Resolved: A person who is no longer considered infectious as per the Ministry of Health clearance criteria.

Status: Current status of case at time of data update.

  • Isolated in Hospital: A person with a positive COVID-19 test result who is currently admitted and isolated in hospital.
  • Isolating: A person with a positive COVID-19 test result who is currently isolating at home.
  • Deceased: Refers to a lab-confirmed case that dies during the COVID-19 investigation. It does not account for unreported deaths that occur after the investigation is closed.
  • Resolved: A person who is no longer considered infectious as per the Ministry of Health clearance criteria.

Tests: Of which the Health Unit is aware. These include tests with pending results.

Under Investigation: Information on the exposure or current status is currently pending or awaiting update.
