Air quality

  • In 2016 North Bay and Parry Sound had no days where the Air Quality Health Index was of high or very high risk.

Beach quality

  • The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit runs seasonal beach sampling to meet the Beach Management Protocol under the Recreational Water Protocol.
  • During the 2018 bathing season, 60 public beaches were sampled by the Health Unit. Samples collected from 9 of the 60 beaches resulted in 10 adverse geometric means.

Food and water

Perfluoroalkylated Substances (PFAS)

The Medical Officer of Health Report and Recommendations on Perfluoroalkylated Substances in Water is related to the detection of perfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS) in North Bay waterways. Dr. Jim Chirico, Medical Officer of Health, has been investigating this issue to determine whether a health hazard exists. He has made the following recommendations to protect the health of the public.

E. coli

The following report summarizes the investigation led by the Health Unit into an outbreak of Escherichia Coli (E. coli) O157:H7 in North Bay, Ontario in October and November 2008.

Vector borne diseases (Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus, Lyme disease, West Nile virus)

Lyme disease

  • The age-standardized rate for Lyme disease in the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit region has been statistically similar to the Ontario rate for all years between 2006 and 2016, with an annual median number of 0 cases (confirmed and probable). In the past five years (2012-2016), a median of one case occurred in our region, while between 2006 and 2011, a median of zero cases occurred in our region.
