Food Handler Training and Certification Program

Food Safety Certification Training courses are offered throughout the year by our Public Health Inspectors.

Re-certification and proctoring

Previously certified individuals and individuals who have taken an online course approved by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care may be eligible to challenge the food handler training exam.

The food safety exam can be written on the following dates in 2017:

September 11, 2017

October  2, 2017

November  13, 2017

December 11, 2017

The start time for the exam is 9:00 a.m. and the location is the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit Office at 681 Commercial Street, North Bay, Ontario.

Please contact extension 2400 at the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit to be registered to write the exam.  The cost to challenge the exam is $20.00, payment can be made by cash or cheque.  Cheques can be made out to the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit.

Individuals that are not able to attend a scheduled exam date or not living in North Bay may call 705-474-1400 ext. 2400 and request an alternate date, time or location.

In addition to the food handler training program offered by the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care recognizes other organizations that also offer food handler training and certification.  For a full list visit:

An online version of the food handler training program is available through the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, through a course called "In Good Hands".  For more information about this course, the cost or to register, visit http://www.ingoodhands.ca/

Food Poisoning

Thousands of people get food poisoning each year. Many people do not report food poisoning because they think the nausea, vomiting and diarrhea they are having is because of the "flu". If you think that you have food poisoning please call 705-474-1400 to report it.

Food Inspection Results and Complaints

Results of food inspection reports are available to the public on request by email: environmental.health@healthunit.ca or by calling 705-474-1400 ext. 2400 or 1-800-563-2808.

Community Events and Farmers Markets

Are you planning on hosting a community/special event in your community or selling food at the local farmers market? Please fill in this Application form (English or French) for community/special event permits. Prior approval must be obtained before operation begins. The application/notification must be submitted to the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit at least 15 days prior to the event.
