Food Handler Training and Certification Program

 

COURSE OUTLINE

The Food Handler Certificate Course is designed to teach food handlers the general principles of safe food handling.  Participants will have a basic understanding of how to identify risk factors associated with foodborne illness and the skills necessary to handle food in a manner that will prevent illness from occurring.  Topics of discussion include public health legislation, food microbiology, food protection and preparation, introduction to HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) procedures, cleaning /sanitizing and personal hygiene.

Upon successful completion of a 6 ½ hour program and an examination, the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit will issue a Food Safety Certificate. This certificate meets the Ontario Ministry of Health mandatory food safety training requirements and is recognized by health units in Ontario.

Hours:  All Food Safety Certification courses are from

              9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. unless noted otherwise.

Class size:  Not to exceed 25 participants

Cost:  $45.00 per student

Please note:

  • Pre-registration is required with payment at least one week prior to course date.
  • Payment by cash or cheque (cheque to be made out to:  North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit)
  • Courses may be cancelled if there are not enough students enrolled.
  • Registrants who cannot attend on course day can have their fee refunded if 24 hours notice in advance of the course date is received by this Health Unit. 

Registrants are responsible for providing their own lunch.

 Re-certification and Proctoring

Previously certified individuals and individuals who have taken an online course approved by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care may be eligible to challenge the food handler training exam.

The food safety exam can be written on the following dates in 2018:

February 12, 2018

March 12, 2018

April 9, 2018

May 7, 2018

June 11, 2018

July 9, 2018

August 13, 2018

September 10, 2018

October 1, 2018

November 12, 2018

December 10, 2018

 

The start time for the exam is 9:00 a.m. and the location is the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit Office at 681 Commercial Street, North Bay, Ontario.

Please contact extension 2400 at the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit to be registered to write the exam.  The cost to challenge the exam is $20.00, payment can be made by cash or cheque.  Cheques can be made out to the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit.

Individuals that are not able to attend a scheduled exam date or not living in North Bay may call 705-474-1400 ext. 2400 and request an alternate date, time or location.

 Food Poisoning

Thousands of people get food poisoning each year. Many people do not report food poisoning because they think the nausea, vomiting and diarrhea they are having is because of the "flu". If you think that you have food poisoning please call 705-474-1400 to report it.

 Food Inspection Results and Complaints

Results of food inspection reports are available to the public on request by email: environmental.health@healthunit.ca or by calling 705-474-1400 ext. 2400 or 1-800-563-2808.

Community Events and Farmers Markets

Are you planning on hosting a community/special event in your community or selling food at the local farmers market? Please fill in this Application form (English or French) for community/special event permits. Prior approval must be obtained before operation begins. The application/notification must be submitted to the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit at least 15 days prior to the event.
