Hey Teens...Watch Your Mouth!

Your mouth is the gateway to your body. It is impossible to be truly healthy without a healthy mouth. The health of your mouth is affected by the foods you eat and drink, how well you clean your teeth and other habits you have. Oral diseases like cavities and gum disease are chronic and get more complex with time. They can affect your ability to eat and speak, as well as the way you look. Oral diseases are preventable. Remember, a healthy mouth means a healthy you.

What you should know about your teeth banner

How important are mouthguards?

During contact sports they are extremely important. One blow to the jaw and you can be faced with serious dental problems. The mouthguard acts as a cushion that redistributes the force of the blow, therefore the impact is absorbed more evenly.  They also protect the soft tissue in and around your mouth from cuts and, of course, help prevent chips or broken teeth.

pierced tongue

So, you're thinking about piercing your tongue?

What you should know before you really decide!

Do you know what to do if someone knocks out a tooth?

Call their dentist immediately.  Gently rinse the tooth do not scrub or brush. Wrap it in a clean cloth and put it in milk and get to the dentist right away. Follow these 4 steps and you just might help save a tooth!

Have you been smothering your teeth in up to 58 lbs of sugar per year?

Before you say no, did you know that if you drink one 591ml bottle of pop every day, after 1 year you will have consumed 58 lbs of sugar. Yikes! And that's only counting one drink per day.  So... How about that glass of water?  Here are more examples:

Coffee Double Double = 2.5 sugar cubes Iced Tea (500ml) = 10 sugar cubes
Iced Cappuccino (414ml) = 12 sugar cubes 100% orange juice (500ml) = 12 sugar cubes
Sports drinks (600ml) = 9 sugar cubes Frozen Lemonade (414ml) = 9 sugar cubes

Why top notch oral hygiene and braces must go hand and hand!

Well, the consequence of poor oral hygiene may leave you shocked!  Did you know that the food and plaque that get trapped in those tiny spaces between braces and wires may cause tooth decay and enamel stains? So be sure to take exceptional care
of your teeth.  Remember to brush after every meal and floss at least once a day to clean between teeth and around the brackets.
